Black Gunk On the Beach

Residents that have lived most of their lives in the area report finding film caskets on the beach. A film casket is a black wooden crate resembling a small casket. It is ironic since it’s unclear if that’s an approved disposal method for these wooden crates that often contain film or other things.

I just read the toxic release inventory for Kodak for 2012, and not just a few days after reading about the stuff they dump in the river, a news story emerges. A resident of Edgemere Drive reports that some black tar-like sulfur-smelling gunk washed up on the beach in her yard following 24 hours of very heavy rainfall..Local media says they think it’s algae of some sort. It was sent to the DEC for testing. I think that someone living on the lake would know algae from other suspicious items. I don’t think they would have called the DEC if it weren’t abnormal.

The lake is often subject to algae overgrowth, and other imbalances likely linked to upsetting the ecosystem by dumping toxins in the water. If residents fine film caskets on the beach, it’s anyone’s guess what else it dumped in there and not reported.

It is unlikely the results of the DEC testing will be release to the public or covered in the media. Here’s to hoping it’s only algae and the tar like substance isn’t actually toxic junk that has settled at the bottom of the lake as a result of years of pollution.
